Whitehall Township Authority
Whitehall Township Authority is a small water provider with energy utility bills nearing $150,000 per year. Located in the PPL service region, the water authority is facing a 30-70% increase in their electric utility rates. If managers failed to take action to reduce their electricity consumption, the water authority would realize significant increases in operating expenses and be forced to push these increased costs onto their customers. The water authority contacted MEnv for consulting advice on increasing the efficiency of their facilities and pumping processes.
Kevin Gombotz, MEnv Special Projects Manager, provided Doug Bowen, the Water Authority Manager, with a detailed energy audit proposal and workplan. The MEnv energy auditing team conducted site visits and interviewed Whitehall staff to gain an in-depth understanding of the design and condition of the facilities, and to learn how essential equipment was being operated and maintained. The water authority gave the MEnv team access to their annual utility bill records, and provided detailed documentation on equipment upgrades and run times.
Deliverables

Results
MEnv presented the complete energy audit to the water authority management and Board in October 2008. Recommended improvements focused on capital improvements and energy management opportunities. The energy audit report recommended $25,500 in improvements with a total of annual savings of approximately $19,500. The simple payback for all the capital improvements and management changes was less than 2 years.
