Expertise
Our strategic partnership team offers detailed energy auditing and greenhouse gas mitigation services to government and business clients. Our group includes engineers certified by HERS (the Home Energy Rating System) and BPI (the Building Performance Institute). Other members of our staff have professional certifications in Hazardous Waste Site Operations, various OSHA certifications and Industrial Hygiene.
Below are the areas of expertise represented in our strategic partnership:
Matson Environmental
Facility Energy Management - We have provided consulting services for a 1.3 million gallon per day water utility facing utility rate increases greater than 50%. Detailed building and process energy analyses were conducted using diagnostic fieldwork, utility records and purchase agreements, equipment specifications, and process control data acquisition. Measures for a 15% cost reduction were outlined with a simple payback of under 5 years including the cost of the audit. A key member of our staff is Jason Grottini who has experience in environmental pollution control, green engineering, and energy management. Jason worked previously as an energy management consultant with the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP). He holds a B.S. in environmental science and technology, and is working toward an M.S. degree in Environmental Pollution Control engineering at Penn State University.
Industrial Operations - We have a long history of conducting assessments in a wide variety of manufacturing areas, including process specification, material sourcing and handling, waste disposal, and pollution control measures. Primary industries include petrochemical, electronics, paper and pulp, wood products, plastics, agricultural, and waste water disposal. We have worked as the lead research partner with an industrial gas and chemical supplier to develop an environmentally improved industrial water treatment process. Project deliverables included greater control, lower cost, water savings, and enhanced discharge compliance. The process has eliminated the use of sulfuric acid for many of its industrial users, an attribute that offers considerable relief from handling, storage, and permitting requirements. A key member of our staff is Kevin Gombotz . Kevin has a background in Mechanical Engineering and process control. He has worked on research and development projects in combustion science, renewable fuels, water treatment, and materials processing. Mr. Gombotz has conducted reviews of existing production operations in the petrochemical and energy generation industries, and consults on the development of new technologies and processes.
Grant Writing - We have extensive experience in locating and developing funding proposals for industrial research and renewable energy projects. Our staff has submitted dozens of funding proposals to state and federal programs including Pennsylvania's Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research programs.
Envinity
Building Science and Applied Systems - Envinity designed and built the first “eco-office building” in State College in 2002. The design incorporated advanced building design features such as radiant heating, passive solar, tankless hot water, water permeable driveway, and natural landscaping. After designing and building our new office, several core M&A staff launched Envinity, Inc a design-build firm that works exclusively in the areas of green design and construction. Liam Goble, of Envinity, is a lead building scientist who has consulted on construction and renovation of single family residences, multi-family housing, manufactured housing, and commercial redevelopment. Matson Environmental works closely with Envinity to unravel complex building science problems and provide performance contracting for select clients.
HVAC - Our staff and strategic partners include engineers, scientists, energy specialists, and designers with decades of design and applied HVAC experience. The team includes engineers certified by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) and the Building Performance Institute (BPI). Envinity was the first certified service provider for the Pennsylvania Home Energy program. A key member of our partnership team is Chris Lehman who has over 30 years of experience with commercial and residential HVAC design, installation, and service. Chris also has extensive solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, and geothermal expertise. He holds certifications in solar design, refrigerants, and duct balancing.
Renewable Energy - Our green design/build partner, Envinity, offers consultation, design and installation services for a variety of renewable energy systems including solar photovoltaic, solar hot water, wind turbines and biomass/biofuel applications. A key member of our partnership staff is Brian Henderson . Brian is an energy analyst certified by both the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) and the Building Performance Institute (BPI). Brian has a background in Civil Engineering and conducts solar and wind power site assessments.
