Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Action Planning

We work with a wide variety of clients to inventory greenhouse gas emissions and create achievable action plans to reduce these emissions over time. We use a variety of research methodologies to document and monitor their emissions.

Designing a Inventory and Action Planning Process

Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Action Planning can generally be divided into four discrete steps. The primary tasks include project initiation, establishing a baseline and emissions forecast, setting a GHG emissions reduction target, and developing a climate action plan.

  1. Project Initiation and Development
    Our first step is to establish a Project Team to review the project goal, scope, schedule and identify key stakeholders for invitation to the Community Climate Team. Matson Environmental will lead an in-depth GHG analysis and inventory training session to compliment any established protocols (i.e. ICLEI). Working with you we then invite community stakeholders and convene the first “Community Climate Team” meeting to identify critical inventory data sources as well as existing or planned reduction measures.
  2. GHG Emissions Analysis: Baseline Inventory and Forecast
    Using the most current baseline data, we lead the Project Team through the inventory and forecasting process. At the same time, we will help determine the quantification of existing and currently planned reduction measures. Often our client will take primary responsibility for data entry and management but we will assist you throughout the entire process, paying particular attention to the documentation of data sources, calculation methods, and assumptions.
  3. Set GHG Emissions Reduction Target
    With our assistance, the Project Team will review current local, State, and Federal goals, and convene a Community Climate Team meeting. This second Climate Team meeting will review the results of the inventory process and engage the community stakeholders in establishing significant yet achievable reduction targets, tailored to the unique assets, liabilities and future of the community. Our goal is to create short term, mid-range, and long term emission reduction targets.
  4. Develop a Climate Action Plan
    We help clients build a “Climate Action Plan” based upon the baseline information and targets established in the inventory and analysis process. Our goal is to directly engage you and the community stakeholders in further discussion, planning, and collaboration so that we identify and answer the critical questions necessary to implement the most successful long-term plan.
  5. Project Implementation & Monitoring
    We will work with you to help implement the plan, monitor results and make any necessary changes to assure success.
